Colne Town Centre Precinct Proposal8.28.15am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 27th Aug 2006
Colne's Liberal Democrat Councillors are pressing ahead with their campaign to improve the run-down precinct area by the red brick shops at the top of the main street. The pedestrianised area is owned by the owners of the shops (Metcalfe Harding & Co act as the agents and "manage" the site). The Council only owns the 12 benches and has recently repaired and painted them - everything else belongs to the commercial owners. Colne in Bloom have been in touch with the owners who "allowed" them to improve the flower beds this summer. "We have now negotiated a source of money from the new Boundary Mill development at Vivary Way," said Councillor Howard Thomas (Vivary Bridge ward, Colne). "We now hope to persuade the owners of the precinct area to hand it over to the Council to renovate and then maintain. "It is a liability to them. We can make a huge improvement, for the benefit of everyone," said Howard.
