Zero Carbon Britain by 2050 says PPC11.57.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 10th Aug 2008
The Liberal Democrat's PPC Afzal Anwar announces that the Liberal Democrats are the first party to aim for a carbon neutral Britain where we absorb as much carbon as we emit by 2050. Whilst addressing local activists he stated that " I am echoing the party's plans for reducing carbon emissions as this has become a serious problem especially with its devastating effects on the Environment." He outlined the party's plans that we will achieve this by ensuring 100 per cent of the UK's electricity comes from clean sources without the use of nuclear power stations; making homes greener and improving public transport. We will provide incentives for renewable technologies and make Britain a greener, healthier place to live. He went on to say " my party's plans to make Britain carbon neutral by 2050 will mean we meet our Kyoto Protocol targets well before the deadline. But this is not where we will stop we will continue to the next stage on international agreements on climate change bringing in developing countries in who have previously been excluded from the initial Kyoto Protocol." Furthermore he finished his address to activists by stating "The Liberal Democrats will ensure that Britain indeed is a safer, cleaner and greener place to live in."
